Anne Muthoni is a Program Officer at Strategy for Humanity. Anne's strong analytical and conceptual abilities, her skill in navigating complex institutional and political landscapes, and her extensive experience with participatory grantmaking, have been pivotal in advancing strategic priorities, particularly in youth engagement. Her specialization includes mental health and psychosocial support, gender-based violence, youth engagement, and case management of refugees and asylum seekers.
Prior to joining Strategy for Humanity, Anne worked at the Hebrew Immigrant Aid Society (HIAS), where she provided Mental Health and Psychosocial Support (MHPSS) case management to over 300 urban-based refugees and asylum seekers. She co-developed successful grant proposals, including for the United Nations Voluntary Fund for Victims of Torture, and occasionally provided fieldwork-level supervisory support overseeing MHPSS, Gender-Based Violence, Child Protection, and Legal Protection programs. Her role also included report writing and co-developing key operational documents, such as Standard Operating Procedures.
Anne also has previous consulting experience. For the Compact for Young People in Humanitarian Action, Anne co-developed a five-year strategic plan that integrated a comprehensive youth engagement and fundraising strategy. This process involved extensive desk-based research, planning, organizing, and facilitating stakeholder consultations, including workshops and key informant interviews with senior leaders from UN agencies, INGOs and state governments. Additionally, she played a key role in advocating for and spearheading the creation of the Young Humanitarians Network within the Compact. She also co-developed the Young Humanitarian’s Handbook, a step-by-step guide for youth implementing humanitarian projects, in collaboration with Action Aid and other Compact members.
Anne also brings expertise in participatory grantmaking. As a core group member of the Karibu Foundation, she co-designed their participatory grantmaking pilot project, which achieved significant success and was later integrated into the foundation’s core grantmaking processes. Prior to this, she co-designed other innovative funds, including the Youth-Fund: COVID-19 Action and the Global Refugee Youth Network Fund. Leveraging her expertise in philanthropy and grassroots leadership, she co-developed a funder’s toolkit (Weaving a Collective Tapestry) in collaboration with the Elevate Children Funders Group, a resource aimed at supporting donors in meaningfully engaging children and youth in philanthropic processes. She presented this toolkit at the 2023 WINGS Forum, showcasing her ability to influence and advocate for youth engagement on global platforms, demonstrating her sustained influence and commitment to advocating for youth engagement and resourcing on global platforms for over four years.
Anne is currently pursuing an MSc in International Disaster Management at the University of Manchester, with her dissertation focusing on the scalability of community-driven flood adaptation strategies in Nairobi to strengthen the city's resilience. She holds a Bachelor's degree in Community Development and Environment from Jomo Keyatta University of Agriculture and Technology, and a Postgraduate Diploma in Education from Mount Kenya University. Anne is fluent in English, Swahili, and Kikuyu, and is learning French.
