Will Ferroggiaro is a Director at Strategy for Humanity. Will is an expert on democracy, human rights and governance, with a focus on freedom of expression, conflict prevention, and citizen participation. He has written extensively on the topic of hate speech, especially in the context of armed conflicts, electoral politics, and rising nationalism.
Respected for his deep expertise and pragmatic skills, Will has undertaken multiple assignments as an expert on the right to information for clients including the U.S. Department of State, Democracy-Reporting International, and the South African History Archive. He has participated in the delivery of training modules and has presented at the Foreign Service Institute of the U.S. Department of State, the World Bank Group, the United Nations, and other public and private sector entities.
Prior to joining Strategy for Humanity, Will was an expert consultant to ASEAN Parliamentarians for Human Rights and the U.S. Holocaust Memorial Museum, and led research projects and managed policy teams for Internews, the Fund for Peace, and the National Security Archive, among others. Will serves as lead consultant on hate speech and conflict for PeaceTech Lab where he has helped design a methodology to analyze hate speech, produced lexicons of hate speech terms, and facilitated local dialogues.
At Internews, Will directed a project on conflict and media, establishing media monitoring programs with local groups in Kenya, Kyrgyzstan, and Myanmar, supervising production of a briefing paper and a toolkit for journalists, and co-authoring guidance for the United States Agency for International Development (USAID). Will went on to lead the organization’s internet policy team, supporting activists in 20 countries and heading its delegation to the 2014 Internet Governance Forum.
For the Fund for Peace, Will designed and facilitated a series of ‘traveling town halls’ on foreign policy held in communities across the United States. He also led a project producing analysis for the United Nations Special Advisor on Genocide Prevention and United Nations Framework Team and served as an analyst and spokesperson for the Fund for Peace’s annual Fragile States Index.
Will was previously a researcher on the award-winning PBS/Frontline documentary “Ghosts of Rwanda.” His commentary has been featured on CNN International, Al Jazeera, and local radio stations in the United States and overseas. He has authored numerous briefing papers and Opinion Editorials, as well as talking points for electoral campaigns and organizations.
Will continues to contribute his expertise to several coalitions and task forces, including the Prevention and Protection Working Group, Electoral Violence Affinity Group, and the Sudans Working Group. He is a board member of the DC Open Government Coalition and has served as an elected executive officer or at-large director for the American Society of Access Professionals.
